Velosi’s Safety Management Specialist (SMS®) exam preparation training helps the participants acquire the management skills needed for business safety. This course includes safety management systems, risk management, accident investigation, and emergency response. It focuses on leadership in safety, health, and environment, participants acquire knowledge that enables them to complete the SMS® certification exam and succeed in higher position safety careers.

A safety management specialist (SMS) is an individual with management skills necessary for the efficient operation of a business’s safety, and the use of these safety management skills as a profession either on a full-time or part-time basis. This is the professional credential for the experienced safety practitioner, whether he or she has a college degree. Most individuals who hold the SMS certification work for a private or public entity (i.e., government department, public agency, military).

By the end of this course, participants will learn to:

• Understand the SMS® certification and its relevance to safety management.
• Develop and utilize organizational safety management systems effectively.
• Manage safety, health, and environmental risks and apply the hierarchy of controls.
• Interpret safety metrics, including cost/benefit analyses and incident rates.
• Conduct incident investigations and emergency preparedness planning.
• Lead and influence a safety culture across industries.

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting. Meeting invites will be shared one day before the first day of training.

• A minimum of 10 years of safety management experience, with 35% of tasks related to safety program management.
• Commitment to the BCSP Code of Ethics.

• Complete the SMS® application and meet the eligibility requirements.
• Register and schedule the exam at a Pearson VUE test center.
• Pass the 4.5-hour, 200-question exam.
• Maintain certification by earning 20 recertification points every 5 years.
