Pipeline Inspection Management System (Onshore & Offshore)

An overview of the features and philosophy of the Pipeline Integrity Management System (PIMS) highlights pipeline regulations and codes which are normally based on safety as well as risk philosophy. The design requirements are established so as to fulfill the objectives of the safety standards. The set of design criteria may thus be seen as the practical interpretation of it.

A given pipeline, as established through Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and then installed accordingly, is the realization of a structure, which in its entirety meets the applicable safety objectives.

In pipeline operations, external and internal inspections are ongoing activities for the purpose of monitoring the condition of the pipeline to ensure that the integrity of pipeline has not been compromised. If the condition found is below the acceptable levels, remedial actions will have to be taken.

The Pipeline Integrity Management System program (PIMS) is developed for use by the pipeline engineer to serve the following purposes:

  • To monitor the technical and safety state of the pipeline system,
  • To define inspection frequency and laying out inspection programs,
  • To execute Risk Based Inspection (RBI) in order to assess the pipeline condition,
  • To carry out defect assessment and remnant life of the pipeline, and
  • To recommend pipeline intervention or repair work when needed.
Evaluation and Condition Monitoring of CP System

Cathodic Protection (CP) is used to control the corrosion of a wide variety of buried and submerged metallic structures. CP acts as a defense system against any kind of coating holidays and defects.

It is a cost-effective way to extend the life of a structure and to ensure integrity throughout its operating life.

Computerized Data Management System

PIMS is based on the PODS data model with an offshore and onshore extension to cater for objects and appurtenances such as risers and subsea templates. The database is enveloped by a security system and role-based access restrictions on pipelines and groups of pipelines ensuring integrity of information. A significant powerful capability in Velosi’s PIMS is the dynamic segmentation of pipelines associated with varying profiles such as location classes, pipeline sections, and other specific user definitions. The dynamic segmentation function is essential to the effectiveness and flexibility of the system.

External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA)
External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) is a structured process to evaluate buried onshore ferrous pipeline integrity without direct contact with the underlying pipeline. The ECDA goal is to enhance safety by managing the risk of pipeline corrosion failures while minimizing the cost required for excavations and unneeded repairs. Once anomalies are found through an ECDA process, only then an excavation may be needed at the identified site to validate the results and mitigate any damages.
